Granite Landscapes, Geodiversity and Geoheritage—Global Context

چکیده

Granite geomorphological sceneries are important components of global geoheritage, but international awareness their significance seems insufficient. Based on existing literature, ten distinctive types relief identified, along with several sub-types, and an overview medium-size minor landforms characteristic for granite terrains is provided. Collectively, they tell stories about landscape evolution environmental changes over geological timescale, having also considerable aesthetic values in many cases. Nevertheless, representation landscapes the UNESCO World Heritage List within Global Geopark network relatively scarce only a few properties have been awarded status recognition scientific value or unique scenery. Much more often, reasons inscription resided elsewhere, biodiversity cultural heritage values, despite very high significance. To facilitate future comparative analysis framework proposed that can be used this purpose.

Historical Perspectives on Biodiversity and Geodiversity

Volume 22 • Number 3 (2005) 29 A basic premise of the geodiversity concept recognizes that there is an intrinsic relationship between biological diversity and geological diversity. In principle, the geologic bedrock is viewed as the foundation of the ecosystem. Geologic resources and processes sustain much greater relationships with biotic resources and biosystems than is commonly recognized. T...

Anthropogenic Effects in Landscapes: Historical Context and Spatial Pattern

Bio-cultural landscapes are characterized by anthropogenic pattern features, of which the measurement constitutes a key step in landscape analysis. Metrics and strategies for this measurement of anthropogenic patterns and their dynamics are discussed, considering the pattern/process paradigm, the patchcorridor-matrix model and the complementarity of landscape composition and configuration as co...

Dynamic landscapes: a model of context and contingency in evolution.

Although the basic mechanics of evolution have been understood since Darwin, debate continues over whether macroevolutionary phenomena are driven by the fitness structure of genotype space or by ecological interaction. In this paper we propose a simple model capturing key features of fitness-landscape and ecological models of evolution. Our model describes evolutionary dynamics in a high-dimens...

Emanation from Granite Countertops

Emanation of radon ( 222 Rn) from granite countertops was measured using continuous and integrating radon monitors, and in air collected from encapsulated pieces of the countertops. A majority of the countertops emitted a measurable amount of radon. Although the granites contained the precursors, no thoron ( 220 Rn) emanation was detected. Gamma-ray spectroscopy was used to determine amounts of...

Earth's youngest exposed granite and its tectonic implications: the 10–0.8 Ma Kurobegawa Granite

Although the quest for Earth's oldest rock is of great importance, identifying the youngest exposed pluton on Earth is also of interest. A pluton is a body of intrusive igneous rock that crystallized from slowly cooling magma at depths of several kilometers beneath the surface of the Earth. Therefore, the youngest exposed pluton represents the most recent tectonic uplift and highest exhumation....
